Tree sitters in Berkeley cost California $21 Million plus

Tree sitters cost state $21M plus
The tree sitters at the University of California (Berkeley) have cost the state of California over $21 Milion and they are only being charged with misdemenors. They finally came out of the last tree this last week.

That is ridiculous, just ridiculous!

For those of you who don’t know, the Unviersity of California wanted to build a sports training center and make iife/safety code fixes to Memorial Stadium.  In order to do that, they needed to cut down a grove of oaks and redwoods.

The extremists took exception to the plan to cut the trees. It didn’t matter that they weren’t students or affiliated in any way with the University.  It also didn’t matter that the University was going to plant over two trees for everyone they took down.

They recently lost the last of their court challenges.

I feel that it is ridiculous and crazy that these people are only being charged with misdemenors.  They all should be charged with a felony and forced to reimburse the University and state of California.

What they cost the state and the Unviersity is more than money. The city was the laughing stock of the nation when Tennesse fans invaded last year. It also solidified the reputation of Berkeley being the nutcase of the world.

University of Arizona football a model for bad sportsmanship

I just want to say that the University of Arizona football team will get theirs sometime this season.  They are the perfect model for bad sportsmanship.
This Saturday, they are playing the University of Idaho in Tucson.  I will be the first to say that Idaho was over-matched in this game.  No doubt about that.

As the favorite you want to beat your opponent, but you don’t want to embarrass them.  But at the end of the second half, Arizona got the ball on their 45 yard-line with about 39 seconds to go.  At this time, they had a 35-0 lead.

They then proceeded to air the ball out and call time outs and scored a touchdown with four seconds left.

You just don’t do that.  You take a knew or run a couple of running plays.  As I said, you don’t embarrass the opponent.

Now you are probably saying that Idaho should stop them and if they can’t, then so be it.  But that is not sportsmanship.

Stoops and the University of Arizona showed their true character tonight, they don’t have any.  I hope when they get to the Pac 10 league schedule, they get their throats stomped on and embarrassed.

I don’t usually root for USC, but they play Arizona in Tucson and will definitely be rooting for the men of Troy.

Major League Baseball, get some better umpires

Major League Baseball, please get some better umpires.  In tonight’s game between the Colorado Rockies and Florida Marlins they blew a couple of calls that cost the Colorado Rockies. Luckily the Rockies now have a 5-0 lead.
The first blown call, Ubaldo Jimenez was up and he foul tipped a ball into the dirt and into the glove of the catcher with two strikes.  It should have been a foul ball, but it wasn’t.

The umpires were not paying attention and ruled it in out saying the catcher caught the ball.  Even the first base umpire, Bob Davidson who was out of baseball for a while because of misjudgments, didn’t see it hit the dirt called him out.

Give me a break!

It gets even worse.

With a runner on first base and no outs, Garrett Atkins hit one to center field.  The umpire ruled that it was a catch and they doubled off the runner for two outs.  The replays clearly showed that it was a short-hop and not a catch.

The umpire who was supposed to get into position to see the play from a different angle, didn’t move and wasn’t in the right position.  So when Clint Hurdle came out to question the call, the umpires did the obligatory gathering and still ruled them out.

Umpires never over-rule themselves and will protect the original call.  It is just stupid.

Major League Baseball always keeps secret how they deal with umpires, but that should change.  They need to be open.  They also need to institute instant replay immediately.

The umpires are doing a disservice to the the players, the Game, and the fans.  If Major League Baseball should hold the game to the highest standard, when they have umpires who can’t do the same, they should be gone.

In the meantime, let the technology help them out and be used in the games. NOW!

The Colorado Rockies stand still on the trading deadline

The Colorado Rockies have stood still on the Major League Baseball trading deadline and then proceed to get blown out in Miami by the Florida Marlins.   It is currently 10-1 in the bottom of the fourth.
I am wondering if this was a good thing or not.  Their pitching has been great lately, but the bullpen has blown some games and tonight their starting pitcher didn’t even last two innings.

Nothing is wrong with their offense, but there pitching has been suspect.  In my opinion, it would have been nice if they would have gone out and done something.

But I guess nothing wasn’t there.  Let’s see what happens the rest of the way this season.

Rules, we need rules…

I play in a coed softball league and the lack of professionalism of the umpires just gets me upset.
Our softball league is pretty relaxed.  For most of us, we want to go out there and have fun.  For the most part we follow general softball rules, but we have instituted a few of our own to help balance things out.

One of those rules caused me to have a disagreement with the umpire.  If you walk a male in our coed league, they get to go to second base.  Easy, right?

Well in this instance, the male walked and he went to second base.  But he did one thing that I think you are supposed to do, touch first base.  So once he went to first base, I had the pitcher appeal to first base to get the out.

Well the umpire didn’t see it that way.  He told me he was safe and that they player didn’t have to touch first base. WHAT!

Excuse me.  As you go around the bases, you are supposed to touch all the bases.  You don’t get to “skip one.  Well he wasn’t going for it and despite my arguing, he told me he would say that he is safe.

So, the umpires are lazy and don’t follow the rules.  Am I wrong to expect that the rules be followed?  It is not that hard to touch first base.

What are your thoughts?

ESPN – Papelbon’s pregnant wife reportedly felt threatened

ESPN – Papelbon’s pregnant wife reportedly felt threatened – MLB.
I just want to say this is taking a rivalry too far.  You kid, you taunt, you trade barbs, but you never, ever phsically threaten a player or his family.  This just shows how classless the New York fans are.

The Red Sox-Yankee rivalry is a great thing for Major League Baseball, but when people threaten another player on the opposite team, give me a break.

This rivalry doesn’t need any more fuel on this fire and the media in New York should be ashamed.  But the people who should be more ashamed are the people who threatened a pregnant women.

The Colorado Rockies are embarrasing, just plain embarrassing

I just want to say the All Star Break couldn’t have come soon enough for the Colorado Rockies.  It has been a horrible first-half.  I don’t think they could have played any worse.
It gets embarrassing because the last two game they played were on National Television, yesterday on Fox Sports and tonight on ESPN, in front of biggest media market of the world, New York City.

The Colorado Rockies, just off a World Series appearance, are now 39-57 and 8.5 games back in the standings.  In the last three games against the New York Mets, they had 11 hits and 1 run.  That is pathetic. Continue reading “The Colorado Rockies are embarrasing, just plain embarrassing”

Rockies win a wild one, win 18-17

The Colorado Rockies won a wild one and had fireworks before the fireworks show at Coors Field tonight.  They came from 9 runs down to beat the Florida Marlins 18-17.
This was an amazing game.  The Rockies were down 7-1, 13-5, and 17-12 to win.

Coors Field is known for some crazy games, but this one was just crazy.  The pitching was horrid on both sides, but that might be the offenses were just amazing.  Lodo magic was in full-force.

Let’s hope this will carry the Rockies forward and propel them back into the race to win the NL West.  No other team in the National League West wants to take over.

Go Rockies!
