DU senior Jesse Martin suffers career-threatening injury, Malone should be suspended

UPDATE: DU senior Jesse Martin suffers career-threatening injury | The Denver Post — All Things Colorado Sports
For those of you who have don’t know, DU senior and assistant captain for the DU hockey team was hit head on by Brad Malone and left motionless on the ice.

Matin ended up losing consciousness and movement in his arms and legs. He did regain movement on the way to the hospital. But after examination it was determined that he has a broken neck in three places and was transferred to Minneapolis for emergency surgery.

His playing career is probably over.

Malone, a draft pick of the Avalanche, should be suspended for his hit. But knowing the hockey culture he’ll probably get off without any punishment. Right after the hit, the referees didn’t even call a penalty, but with Martin laying motionless I guess they thought they had to do something.

Until hockey players start respecting each other, people will continue to get hurt like this. Hit hard, but hit fair.

It’s time the WCHA that they won’t tolerate these hits anymore.

My thoughts and prayers are with Martin and his family. Hopefully he gets healthy soon!

Update:

Here is a video of the hit.

Fox Soccer Channel in HD

I am getting into watching soccer and one of the things that I hate is that I have to watch the Fox Soccer Channel in standard definition despite the fact that they are broadcasting in High Definition.
I’m on Comcast and having to watching it in standard definition ruins the experience, especially if you are trying to watch the English Premier League games.

Common Comcast, please add the Fox Soccer Channel in HD.

Rapids Win Game #1 of Playoffs

The Colorado Rapids won the first game of the first round of the Major League Soccer playoffs in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. They beat the Columbus Crew 1-0.
They will finish the series on November 6 in Columbus. It is a cumulative score format so if the Rapids win or tie in that match they will move on to the Eastern Conference Finals.

Denver needs to get behind the Rapids. They are playing quite well right now and have the chance to march deep into the playoffs. It could be a fun run.

Go Rapids!

Problem with being on the east coast

The problem with being on the east coast is adjusting to the time difference. From Denver, it’s only 2 hours. But it’s a long 2 hours.
It’s almost midnight right now and the pub is closing in the hotel but there are still west coast games going on. Plus, I’m not even tired.

The good thing is that I don’t have any thing in the morning. This is different from my other trips here where I have to get up early to get into our office.

I can take it easy and possibly go for a nice walk around DC before the conference gets going at 1.

If you didn’t know, I’m in DC for the 2010 PRSA International Conference. It’s looking to be a great conference with over 3,000 participants. I’m a little disappointed in the keynote speakers, but thworkshops look really good.

More soon!

PGA Tour You Blew It!

To the officials of the PGA Tour, you blew it! BIG TIME!
On the 18th hole in today’s final round tournament leader Dustin Johnson hit it into the gallery. He was not thinking it was in a bunker, it was where the gallery stands.

But in your antiquated thinking, you had it as a bunker. Granted when the public plays the course, it is a bunker, but in your course set up you took it out of play to make the final hole a little tougher for the pros.

If you want it to play as a bunker, put it play. But if you allow the gallery to trample it, you lose the definition of the edges of the bunker and it plays a lot differently. Dustin Johnson should not have been penalized for your incompetence.

A course is designed to be played a specific way, don’t mess with it and the game will still be ok.

Don’t Stay at the Fairfield Marriott on Paradise in Las Vegas

I like to stay at Marriott’s across the country. They usually do a good job.
But the Fairfield Marriott on Paradise is not good for business or leisure travelers.

In Las Vegas, it begins with the air conditioners and this hotels can’t keep up. Our first room it was barely working so we moved and it was working a little better.

We left the room for a couple hours hoping it would catch up, but alas it didn’t. I spoke with the front desk and they blammed it on the heat.

Well that is why we want the air conditoners to work. It was actually cooler in the hallways than in the room.

There was a refridgerator in the room, but it barely worked. We put some water in there and they were somewhat cool by morning.

The one thing I noticed for business travelers is the lack of outlets. There was only one on the desk. So if you need to charge your laptop and cell phone, you’re out of luck unless you take it to the bathroom.

The only partially good thing was the wired internet. It did websites well, but it looked to throttle media files. It took about 10 minutes to download a couple minute podcast. Not good.

Overall, if you are looking for an off-the-strip hotel, skip this one. There are many more and better options.
