Great Story on Zappos on ABC Nightline

Heard about a profile on Zappos last night on Nightline on Twitter from the CEO so I decided to check it out today on the web. I can’t stay up that late to watch Nightline these days.
It was a great profile of a great company.  They are doing a lot of great things and their employees really enjoy what they do.  It looks like a fun atmosphere.

I came to learn of Zappos when I was going through the Denver International Airport and they had advertising in the plastic bins that one would put their personal belongings in to go through security.  I questioned it at the time, but I now think it is brilliant.  They have a captive office.

Congrats to all you Zappos employees out there.  I have learned more about your company by watching this piece and following your CEO on Twitter.  You should all be excited to work there.  You have earned a new customer.

Heading to NYC

I am heading to NYC in just over a week for a much needed vacation.  The main reason for the trip is for my Dad and I to visit the ultimate temple of baseball, Yankee Stadium.
We will be there right after the All Star game and we are looking to take in as much of the city as we can.  I have been there a couple times before, but my Dad hasn’t.

The plan so far is to take it easy on the first day.  We are going to take a sail on a Schooner Adirondack in the afternoon and that is all we have planned.  We will probably squeeze some other things in.

The second day is the Yankee’s game.  We are going to get there early to see Monument Park and just take the whole thing in.  It is going to be a special treat to see it and we wanted to see it before it gets torn down. (That should be a crime.)

The third day we are going to see Boeing Boeing.  It has won a Tony and it should be fun.  It is a mantinee on a Sunday, so we will have time to see a bunch of other things before and after.

The fourth day is that we have a tour of the NYSE in the early afternoon through my Dad’s broker, so we have a lot of time to do stuff.

We fly home late on the fifth day, so we can get up and see some sights we missed before heading out to the airport to fly home.

My Dad and I need to get together and get some more things planned.

If you have any suggestions for something to see or a restaurant to eat at, let me know in comments.  I am looking for something that is local, not a tourist place, specifically the restaurants.  I got some from my sister in-law who used to live there, but always looking for more.

I’ll be blogging throughout my stay, so keep checking back.  I’ll be reviewing what we have done and reviewing the restaurants we are eating at.

On Day Care, Google Makes a Rare Fumble

Talking Business – On Day Care, Google Makes a Rare Fumble – NYTimes.com
Google gets positioned as the company that everyone wants to work for because of all they do for their employees.  But in the case of day care, they are falling through the cracks.

By raising the cost of day care, they are creating an elitist atmosphere and a division within their employee ranks.  In creating this division, employees are not happy and many of the brightest are now leaving for other companies.

I am hoping that this shows other companies how not to treat their employees.

Rockies win a wild one, win 18-17

The Colorado Rockies won a wild one and had fireworks before the fireworks show at Coors Field tonight.  They came from 9 runs down to beat the Florida Marlins 18-17.
This was an amazing game.  The Rockies were down 7-1, 13-5, and 17-12 to win.

Coors Field is known for some crazy games, but this one was just crazy.  The pitching was horrid on both sides, but that might be the offenses were just amazing.  Lodo magic was in full-force.

Let’s hope this will carry the Rockies forward and propel them back into the race to win the NL West.  No other team in the National League West wants to take over.

Go Rockies!

Colorado Rockies Fireworks Display

I went to the Colorado Rockies game last night versus the Florida Marlins and then watched the fireworks display afterwards.  It was a fun game and evening, especially since the Rockies came back and won the game 6-5 in the bottom of the 11th evening.
But, as always, the fireworks stole the show.  It was amazing.  I was able to capture it on my Flip Video camera. Enjoy.

Getting older and to a better year…

Well here is to getting older. Tomorrow, July 3, is my 39th birthday. Not again, for the first time. The funny thing is that I don’t feel any older.
Birthdays are always fun, especially when my birthday is on July 3. We are going as a family plus my niece, nephew, and sister in-law, to the Rockies game and fireworks afterwards. It is always a fun evening and we enjoy the evening out as a family.

But this is better than last year for me. Last year at this time I was in the hospital to have my appendix out. I was a hurting puppy and it is much better to be home hanging out with the family than in a hospital in quite-a-bit of pain.

Well here is to another year.
