Evernote

Well I just downloaded Evernote and I am going to see how this will help me keep up with things.
For work, I have been trying paper copies of notes, but I don’t have time to capture them and synthisize them so I can search and capture them. Paper is not really working.

So I am going to give it a try and see how it works. Try back here later to see how I am doing.

What is all the buzz about Twitter?

Twitter has seemed to taken off in the last couple of months.
From listening to MacBreak’s discuss Steve Jobs keynote at MacWorld and Twitter working its way into the conversation to recent podcasts and news discussing it today, including the Wall Street Journal’s Tech Podcast.

From what I understand about the product, it is a place where people can text what they are doing right now. But why does that appeal to people?

To me, it is just a way for people to be exhibitionists and voyeurs at one time.

I don’t know if I will use it or not. I will keep a watch on it and see if it has worth to me. Right now, I don’t see it.

To get a good understanding of what Twitter is to people, Chris Pirillo posted a podcast about it, “Instant SMS Friend Updates via Twitter.com

Linksys Router BEFSR41 Problems

Well I have a Linksys Router BEFSR41 and I have been having nothing but problems with it over the last couple of months.
I had one for several years and had no problems. I would say almost 9 years of working and no problem. But it apparently died a couple of months ago.

I went with a new one and it was a little crazy getting set up. Linksys’ automatic install is worthless, especially when you have another Linksys wireless router on the network.

Well this one did the same thing after about a month. It just completely died. I couldn’t access the admin screen, I couldn’t get to the Internet, nothing. I would cycle it, nothing. Well I hooked up my wireless Linksys router and everything worked fine. So I took it back and exchanged it for another one.

Well this one worked a week and it did the same thing. I figured out there is something else going on so I did some deep searching on the Internet and found a solution on the Linksys site. Apparently there have been some changes on the Comcast cable modems lately and they are putting out a bunch of noise and this overwhelms routers and causes them to constantly reset themselves.

But it can be fixed by changing Filter Multicast to Enabled. If you do this, the noise gets filtered and it works fine.

That is it and I am not having any problems now. Yeah!

Now, Comcast service is another matter….

Neumann Homes Begins Construction Again

Well Neumann Homes began construction again in our neighborhood. It is about time.
They have been suffering some money problems and owed their contractor a lot of back payments and construction completely stopped in our neighborhood. You can read more in a previous post.

But today they were out working and pouring concrete and working on homes. It was nice to see and I will be glad when they are done and all the homes are sold.

Viacom Is Barking Up the Wrong Tree

I think that Viacom is barking up the wrong tree. YouTube and Google have done nothing wrong in how the operate.
They operate under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act where they remove infringing material when requested by the copyright holder. In fact, Viacom screwed up and screwed some posters when they requested a bunch of infringing material be removed and they requested that YouTube remove material that had nothing to do with Viacom.

The issue is that people are posting shows from various Viacom properties. In the suit, has Viacom been damaged from this posting by people who love these shows? I doubt it. In fact, I bet that Viacom is seeing an increase in their viewership because more people are watching their shows because they saw them on YouTube.

I hope this ends quickly in a settlement like YouTube has entered into agreements with other media companies, but I don’t think that is going to happen. YouTube/Google is ready to go to battle and in this copyright case they have a good chance of winning.

What is up with Comcast

I am wondering why everyone is having problems with the change to an earlier daylight savings time. This change was solidified a couple of years ago with the Energy Policy Act of 2005.
Well Comcast seems to be having problems. I have a HD DVR through Comcast and all of the scheduled recordings are recording an hour earlier. So instead of CBS Sunday Morning, I got some kids cartoon.

Give me a break Comcast. You have had two years to get this fixed and you still couldn’t do it. You may have sent out patches, but if they don’t make it to everyones DVR or they don’t work, then you have a problem and you failed.

As of now I have had no other problems and everything is working fine, including my computers. It is amazing in 2007 that we are still having these problems.

Anna Maria’s is the Place for Italian in Dupont Circle

One of my stops when I am in Washington, DC, is at Anna Maria’s in Dupont Circle. It has been in its location for many years and it has some of the best Italian food that I have ever had.
It all begins by the narrow front on Connecticut Avenue and how you are greeted when walk in the door. There are photos of the famous people who have eaten here previously, given you a glimpse of what is to come for dinner.

When you sit down you will see a great menu, and to me, a somewhat lacking wine menu. After you order they bring out bread and the Focaccia just melts in your mouth.

The menu has a lot of good looking items, but to me the Egg Plant Parmesan is the best.  The homemade red sauce is delicious and the egg plant topped with real mozzarella just melts in your mouth.

The minestrone soup is chalk full of vegetables and noodles and really hits the spot on a cold evening.

Desert is a wonderful experience.  There are a lot of wonderful items that they will show you on the desert tray, but for me the Tiramisu is the best.  It just tastes wonderful on your taste buds.

The service is wonderful and the drinks and food is brought out promptly.

To improve the dining experience, it would be nice to see a better wine menu.  It would be nice to have more wines offered by the glass.  There just were not too many to select from.

Overall this is a good dining experience.  I just think that it gets lost amongst all the great places to eat in Dupont circle.  Take a chance and enjoy Anna Maria’s.

What is with the Weather…

I spend most of the winter in Denver where the weather has been increadibly cold and snowy.  In fact, for the months of December, January, and February it has snowed 1 in every 4 days.  In the east, it has been mild and warm.
But as soon as I come to Washington, DC, the weather turns cold and snows and the weather in Denver is in the 60’s.  Why can’t it just stay put?

I can’t wait to return to the warmth of the Denver area.

Neumann Homes, Are They In Trouble?

I am wondering if Neumann Homes is in trouble financially. They have stopped work in our neighborhood, even homes that they are building for someone and not on spec.
We even had a notice of a lien to be placed upon our house because they have failed to pay their contractors.

They have been working. According to a story in the Chicago Tribune, they have reworked their loans and now have $55 million in revolving credit.

It would be nice if they were going to finish our neighborhood, but I am not too optimistic, even with this new money. The new home market sucks and the number of homes on the market because of fraudulent or bad loans leading to foreclosure is crazy.

I just hope the market improves soon so that the remaining lots can be built out and the homes sold. It is just not helping our home value at this time.
