The Denver Post – Shortages added up to slow vote tally
I am glad that I don’t live in the City and County of Denver. They can’t seem to get votes right, one of our most basic rights as a citizen of the United States.
Last year they had to keep voting locations open several hours longer because of computer problems. This year they are blaming it on a lack of people to count the votes, and those who were charged to count left and went home early.
In an article in the Denver Post, “The 30 workers in charge of preparing ballots to be run through vote- count machines went home around 8:30 p.m. instead of working to sometime between 10 p.m. and midnight as elections planners had expected.”
To help get the job done, they brought in police officers to help finish the count.
Overall, the City and County of Denver had 146 people to count over 91,000 ballots. That is 1 person to count 627 ballots. That compares to Jefferson County, which has a lot more area than Denver, that had 85 ballots to count over 96,000 ballots. That is one person to 1,113 ballots, a lot bigger ratio.
The problem comes in that it took Jefferson County 4 hours, 30 minutes to count all their ballots. It took 27 hours for Denver to count theirs. That is just uncalled for.
Denver can and should do a better job of counting their ballots. Even the new clerk and recorder Susan O’Malley admits it, “…the lags in tabulating results show her elections office still isn’t prepared for next year’s primary and presidential elections.“
I am just glad that I don’t life in Denver proper. I couldn’t depend on my vote going for the candidates or issues that I voted for or, for the fact of the matter, my vote even counting.
My bet, they will screw up the Presidential election in a year.
