Jib Jab Does It Again

JibJab has done it again and come up with a great cartoon parody.
This time they have done it with the news.  They have hit it right on.  The news has gone slowly down hill as they try to be profitable instead of reporting the news.

See What We Call The News by JibJab.

If you want to read up more on the news and what is happening, Frontline had a great documentary on it.  You can watch the whole thing online, News War.

For me, you can look at all the latest news regarding Anna Nicole Smith.  Why is that news?  I think that we have much more going on in this world that affects more people than what is happening with Anna Nicole Smith.

It would be nice to see better news presentation out there, but with the drive for money and to be profitable it won’t happen.

Smoking in Restaurants Is Crazy, Maybe Virginia Should Ban It To

In Colorado we have implemented a law that makes all restaurants and bars smoke-free. But it is crazy when you travel and you don’t know the regulations, especially if you are a non-smoker.
One of the tough things about visiting the Washington, DC, area is that Virgina allows smoking in its restaurants and bars. Well, what do you expect from a state that has made a lot of money from growing tobacco.

But it is more than that. Smoking hurts the workers who must work in restaurants and bars, especially if they are not smokers. There has been scientific studies completed in Colorado that shows non-smokers who work in casinos, yes there are casinos in Colorado and they still allow people to smoke in them, test like they smoke two packs a day.

This is ridiculous. People who work in restaurants and bars should not be subjected to this. In fact, research shows that revenues will increase once smoking in bans.

There are currently 14 states that do not allow smoking, maybe Virginia should be the next.

Casino Smoking Ban Bill Advances

A bill to expand the smoking ban in the state of Colorado has advanced through the state house and now moves on to the state senate. House Bill 1269 would ban smoking in casinos in Colorado.
When the smoking ban was passed last year, casinos were one of the few exemptions where smokers could still smoke and it has created controversy ever since. It cleared the state house with relative ease with a vote of 36-29.

Last year when the bill was passed, I was amazed that this exemption was in there but you have to remember the strong lobby that the casinos have. The smoking ban has been good for employees in the state and for all of those non-smokers who visit those establishments. Casino ownes are trying to scare the legislators saying that the tax revenue will go down 20% – 35% if this ban goes into effect. But I doubt that this will happen.

Contrary to what those business owners and casino owners are saying the smoking ban will reduce business, more people are going out and revenues are up. The city of Boulder has seen an increase in revenues since the smoking ban went into effect. Revenues were up 3.14% from January 1997 to October 1997. You can read more about the economic impacts of smoking bans at BREATH, the California Smoke-free Bars, Workplaces and Communities Program. With this and the other improvements in other states, the reveunes will not go down.

The non-smoking workers in casinos have taken health tests and most of them test like they smoke two packs a day. That is crazy. The state must do more to protect them and the patrons who are non-smokers.

I hope the Senate comes through and passes this to.  If not, I expect to see a petition on our next state election to enact this ban.  If the legislators can’t do it, then the people will.

Colorado Amendment 41 Goes to Far

Colorado Amendment 41 goes to far in limiting gifts that state and local govermnet employees, elected officials, and their families can except. Gifts can be no more than $50.
But what is happening is that families are not able to except scholarships over $50 because it is felt that this would violate the ban. Why can’t students who compete fairly with others except these scholarships? There is no bribe or any other intention than providing students money to attend college.

The Denver Post looked at this today in a story, “Amend. 41 Holding Up Scholarships“. Two students who were awarded 9Kids Who Care Award scholarships will not be able to accept them because at least one of their parents works for a state or local government.

Granted Amendment 41 is being reviewed to see if scholarships are covered by this, but if you read the letter of the law, it is. This problem should be immediately fixed, but it can’t without a vote of the people because it was an amendment to the state constitution.

This is why I voted against this amendment. It went to far and overreached in limiting gifts and money that officials may receive. There were already plenty of laws and ethics that are out there without having to amend the state constitution.

It is only creating more problems than we had before and it will probably cost us more money in the future because we will have to amend the amendment to allow children of permanent employees of our state and local governments to receive scholarships to attend school. Heaven knows they need it because they don’t nearly make enough money to pay to attend college, especially in Colorado.

Wonkette Goes Over the Edge with This Post

Gerald Ford has always been for equal rights for all. It does not matter if they were gay, straight, or black. He worked to ensure that everyone was treated equally. They were commenting on a story originally published today in the Wall Street Journal.
Wonkette, you went a little too far this time. President Ford was someone who appreciated and respected everyone and this was a couple who did something to save a former President’s home when no one else cared or would do anything.

Bar Files Ethics Charges Against Duke Lacrosse Prosecutor

According to a AP Story, the North Carolina Bar has filed ethic charges against Mike Nifong, the prosecutor in the Duke Lacrosse case.
The North Carolina Bar has charged Nifong with “violating the prohibition against making comments that have a substantial likelihood of heightening public condemnation of the accused.” He was also charged with “breaking forbids dishonesty, fraud, deceit, and misrepresentation.” In the story, this was added because Nifong told a reporter that the players probably used a condom after the DNA results came back negative when he knew that wasn’t true.

When I first heard of this case, I was saddened that this had happened. But as more of the evidence has been made public I have become angry that the charges have not been dropped. But upon learning that Nifong was up for re-election, I feel that this case was brought forward for purely political reasons.

Paul’s World also has this same opinion, “It seems fairly clear this guy used this case for political purposes, pursued charges he could not sustain, withheld evidence and pretty much abused his office.”

Rape and kidnapping are serious charges. And when they are brought forward falsely, it only hurts the current and future cases that are being tried or will be tried in the future.

Nifong could be admonished or disbarred for these charges. I think Nifong should drop the rest of the charges and step down as county prosecutor and then be disbarred by the North Carolina Bar.

Some Sad News…Former President Ford Has Died

I am hearing some breaking news.  Former First Lady Betty Ford has told the Associated Press that her husband and former President Gerald Ford has died, he was 93.
He took over this country in a troubled time and did a pretty good job only to get caught up in the anti-Republican and anti-Nixon election to lose the election to Jimmy Carter.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family in this sad time.

Barney Returns for an Encore

The White House is at it again with another hilarious video from Barney.  This year’s holiday video is entitled, “Barney’s Holiday Extravaganza“.
Barney gets creative when OMB and Treasury tell him there is no budget for his movie.  In putting together his no budget movie, he passes on Education Secretary Spellings in favor of Karl Rove for the dancing scene.  And Tony Snow does a good job of putting Barney off and blaming the press corps.  Sounds like something he does every day. 😉
All-in-all this is a fun movie that gives someone a different look at the White House, especially during the holiday season when it is so beautiful.

Thanks Barney.  We are looking forward to more.
