Simple Tagging for WordPress, Finally Working

Well it was not that simple, but I got Simple Tagging for WordPress working with my theme.
I first had to get the tags.php file working correctly and once I did that, it all started falling together.

Since I have that working, I have been able to tweak the index.php page and single.php page to reflect that I am using both categories and tags. Categories will allow me to group larger topics together and tags will allow me to focus on the specific so that I don’t get too long of a category list.

Memorial Day

I just want to do a quick post to remember all those who served our country, protected us, and defended our rights.
Many made the ultimate sacrifice and I want to honor them.

On this day that we use to kick-off the summer season, let us take a moment to reflect on what this day is supposed to be and remember the sacrifices that many people have made throughout the course of the history of the United States.

Let’s all remember to fly our flag today in their memory.

A Great Testimonial – Death by Veganism

In an op-ed in the New York Times, “Death by Veganism” Nina Planck wrote a great story about the nutrition that a baby needs.
For those of you who haven’t heard, a couple was convicted of murder, involuntary manslaughter, and curelty for only feeding their baby soy milk and apple juice. Their baby died.

In her article, Planck writes about the nutrition that a baby needs and it is lot more than a vegan diet offers.

The best thing for a baby is breast milk and my wife breast feed our two children. But if the mother is not getting the necessary nutrients, the baby will not get the necessary nutrients.

A vegan diet may be good for some people, but you need to be careful and make sure that you get the right nutrients. But if you are a mother who is breastfeeding or vegan parents, it is necessary to make sure that you and your baby are getting the correct nutrients to grow a healthy baby.

Scientology Followers Harass Journalist

Scientology followers are harassing a journalist from England who is trying to do a story on their “religion” or how I think of it, a cult.
I agree with the BBC reporter, John Sweeney, that their actions are weird, sinister and outright scary.

In an article that was run on the BBC website, “Row over Scientology video“, he describes the harassment he has experienced since he started working on his story that will air soon on the BBC.

With all his experiences and other things that I have seen and heard, this group is nuts and definitely a cult.

Congratulations University of Idaho Grads!

Today the University of Idaho, my alma mater, graduated over 1,600 people. What a great day to be a Vandal.
You can watch the pre-graduation processional into the Dome for the graduation ceremony.

Go Vandals!

What is happening with customer service

I am wondering what is happening to customer service in this country. Where has it gone?
We decided to take the kids to McDonald’s (Zuni and 128th) because of various errands this evening, don’t worry it is not a regular thing. Well the play area was a disaster and there was spilled soft drinks on the floor. The tables were dirty and it was not a great place to eat. The same in the main dining room. I even had to clean the table that we ate at. It was disgusting.

Then I stopped at the grocery store to pick up some groceries and get some lunch meat. Well the Safeway near our house decided to close their deli at 7 pm because someone was sick. It is crazy. They couldn’t find someone to run the deli? It is crazy and a great inconvenience to work all day and go grocery shopping and not be able to get what you want because they didn’t schedule enough people.

Customer service has disappeared in this country. It is amazing to me how companies can do this to their customers. It never used to be like this. I wish that they would get with it.

Why do I feel the way I do about the Virgina Tech massacre

I don’t know why I feel the way I do about the Virgina Tech massacre. For some reason I feel a connection to the campus, the students, the community, and everything else that I am watching.
I have been having this sorrowful and empty feeling ever since this happened.

In thinking about this as I was driving home from work this evening and discussing it with my wife, I think I figured out why.

The reason that I feel the way that I do is that Virgina Tech and Blacksburg, Virgina are similar where I went to school at the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho.

Even though Idaho is a smaller school and Moscow is a smaller town, it is a close-knit campus and community. In listening to the studens describe their friends and their relations on campus and with the community, it is really similar. It just hit really close to home for me.

I am amazed how the students, faculty, and staff are handling all this tragedy and attention. My thoughts and prayers are with them as they move forward.

And my thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. I wish there was something that I could say to the families that would ease their pain and loss. But besides praying for them, there is not much more that I can do right now.

God Bless.

Happy Easter

I just want to wish everyone a Happy Easter.
Enjoy the day with your family and close friends.

The Year Without Toilet Paper

In looking around the New York Times website today I found this story, The Year Without Toilet Paper.
The premise of the story is that this family is living a year in New York doing their best to not have an impact on the earth. No trash, nothing grown outside a 250-mile radius of Manhattan, not using the elevator, nothing that uses fossil fuels, or toilet paper.

This is an interesting idea and experiment for a book, but this is something that I couldn’t do. These days it would be pretty hard to do this, especially with my wife.

I am not meaning that we are not doing our part to reduce our footprint. We drive a hybrid, we have replaced most of our light bulbs with compact flourescent bulbs, walk to the grocery store when I can, and try to recycle as much as we can.

But I couldn’t live without toilet paper.

Scott Wells on his blog Boys in the Band has a pretty good point in his blog post, Make some impact, effectively,:

Look at your checkbook. It should be pretty easy to pick out the parts of your life that deserve an sustainability and environmental audit. Let’s say housing and property maintainance, electricity and fuel, transportation, food, medical and health care and charitable giving.

I think all of us should look at how we are impacting the world and do our part to reduce our impact and footprint. We should do what is best for ourself and our family.

I wish Beavan and Conlin well. And I will be looking for the book and documentary when they come out. You can follow their year at noimpactman.com.

Neumann Homes Begins Construction Again

Well Neumann Homes began construction again in our neighborhood. It is about time.
They have been suffering some money problems and owed their contractor a lot of back payments and construction completely stopped in our neighborhood. You can read more in a previous post.

But today they were out working and pouring concrete and working on homes. It was nice to see and I will be glad when they are done and all the homes are sold.
