Denver Bronco Darrent Williams Killed in Shooting

In the early morning hours on Speer Boulevard, Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was killed as he was riding in a limousine.
Many news outlets are covering this, here is the Denver Post story.

It is really sad that this has happened to anyone, but especially Darrent Williams. He was a good person who did a lot for the community.

But it shouldn’t happen to anyone. Shooting at someone as they are driving down the street is just insane, shooting at anyone is insane. People need to come up with another way to handle their differences or just walk away and ignore it.

This is not a good way to start the year in Denver.

My hearts and wishes go to Williams Mom and Grandmother and the Denver Broncos.

Denver Broncos Lay an Egg

The Denver Broncos were in perfect position to go to the playoffs and then manage to lose to the San Francisco 49ers 26-23 in overtime.
The way that the Broncos played the second half of the year they didn’t deserve to have a chance at the playoffs.  But with the perfect opportunity to win against a weaker team, they came out and laid one of the biggest eggs in the history of the franchise.

They need to address many things and one of them is the defense.  They started out the season strong and faded down the stretch.  They even faded at the end of games, todays was an example.  They need better conditioning and be ready to play 60 minutes.

They also need a running back to hold on the ball.  After putting the ball on the grass at critical moments the last three weeks, Tatum Bell was in the game again and put it on the grass.

These professionals need to look at what they want to do and come out and play next year.  If not, there might need to be a change at coach.  Shanahan did not do a good job this year and his message might be getting old in Denver and the game might be passing him by.

Backup Service Is Really Easy

In a recent article, Walt Mossberg talks about backup services, “These Services Make Backing Up Your Files Safe and Inexpensive“.
He reviewed two services, Mozy and Carbonite.

Mossberg liked Mozy over Carbonite because it is not limited and more customizable. However, according to Mossberg, Carbonite was quicker and simpler to set up.
I use Mozy and it is real easy to use. I like it because you can add storage space as you need it and you can choose which folders that you want to backup. For those of you who are concerned about security, you can pick your own password for security key. That way, you are the only person who can get to the data.

There are some drawbacks. The first backup that you make, especially if you have chosen a lot of files, takes a while. But once you are done with that, it becomes incremental after.

If you are looking for a good, off-site back up solution, Mozy works really well.

Storm Leaves Colorado

The storm left Colorado and it didn’t do too much damage to the metro Denver area.  Most snow totals in the metro area were in the 8 to 10 inch range.  Which on top of last weeks storm is quite a bit of snow.
But Boulder and the foothills got hammered, mainly on Saturday night.  Snow totals are anywhere from 24 to 48 inches.

These two storms have been tough, but the moisture that state got was needed badly and should help us out this summer.  I know the farmers got to be loving this.

IE7 – CSS Compatibility Needs Improvement

I have been trying to tweak this blog so that it will render correctly in IE7. Why is IE7 so bad at rendering CSS. It works fine in Firefox.
I think it is because they have to do something different. The problem that I had is that it has a bug in background-image and background-color command in CSS. It hides text that should float over it.

I have done a work-around and it displays as close as I can get it now. But IE7 needs to improve its CSS rendering or people will continue to move away from it.

Bar Files Ethics Charges Against Duke Lacrosse Prosecutor

According to a AP Story, the North Carolina Bar has filed ethic charges against Mike Nifong, the prosecutor in the Duke Lacrosse case.
The North Carolina Bar has charged Nifong with “violating the prohibition against making comments that have a substantial likelihood of heightening public condemnation of the accused.” He was also charged with “breaking forbids dishonesty, fraud, deceit, and misrepresentation.” In the story, this was added because Nifong told a reporter that the players probably used a condom after the DNA results came back negative when he knew that wasn’t true.

When I first heard of this case, I was saddened that this had happened. But as more of the evidence has been made public I have become angry that the charges have not been dropped. But upon learning that Nifong was up for re-election, I feel that this case was brought forward for purely political reasons.

Paul’s World also has this same opinion, “It seems fairly clear this guy used this case for political purposes, pursued charges he could not sustain, withheld evidence and pretty much abused his office.”

Rape and kidnapping are serious charges. And when they are brought forward falsely, it only hurts the current and future cases that are being tried or will be tried in the future.

Nifong could be admonished or disbarred for these charges. I think Nifong should drop the rest of the charges and step down as county prosecutor and then be disbarred by the North Carolina Bar.

UPS Finally Delivers Package

Well after being in Denver for a week, United Parcel Service (UPS) finally delivered the package.
I can’t believe it took so long for them to do this. I would have expected delivery on Friday, Saturday, and no later than Tuesday.  It should not have taken an additional two days.

Well, you finally delivered it UPS.  Don’t expect any more business from us!

Another Snow Storm Moving Into Denver

Another snowstorm is moving into the Denver area and it is expected to begin after 12 PM on 12/28.
It will be interesting to see what happens and how this one is handled compared to the previous one.  The problem with this storm is that the roads in the neighborhoods have not been cleared completely, there are shortages at the gas stations, and the grocery stores have been running out of the staples – milk, bread, and produce.  Some stores have only received one shipment of merchandise since the last storm.

A winter storm warning has been posted and they are calling for 10 to 18 inches of snow by Friday morning with blowing and drifting snow.  More heavy snow is expected through Friday until Saturday morning.

More on this one as it develops.
