Another Snowstorm Hits Denver, Round 3

Another snowstorm has hit Denver.  This is the third one in three weeks where we have received over 8 inches of snow.
Check out this story in the Denver Post, Another snowstorm? I’ll give you an earful.

This snow was not as bad as the first two, but it did cause its share of problems and driving in it was just crazy.  I spoke with some friends in the foothills and they have not received over eight feet of snow beginning with the first storm.

This is the most snow that I have seen since I moved to the Denver area, especially this is the longest that it has stayed on the ground without completely melting in between storms.

And there are rumors for another one coming next week.

Why Does 9 News Jeopardize the Safety of Witnesses?

In an article posted on the 9 News Website, Broncos mourn as investigation continues, they reported on the mourning of the Broncos and the status of the investigation into the shooting of Darrent Williams.
But one of the things that they reported was the names of the two people who were injured in the shooting.  Other news agencies have been withholding the names of those that were injured and who were in the limo because they are witnesses to the shooting and some are fearful for their safety as the people who did this might seek to quiet them.

I don’t understand why Paula Woodward did this and the web producer, Jeffrey Wolfe wrote it in the web story.  This is not good journalism.

Wonkette Goes Over the Edge with This Post

Gerald Ford has always been for equal rights for all. It does not matter if they were gay, straight, or black. He worked to ensure that everyone was treated equally. They were commenting on a story originally published today in the Wall Street Journal.
Wonkette, you went a little too far this time. President Ford was someone who appreciated and respected everyone and this was a couple who did something to save a former President’s home when no one else cared or would do anything.

High Speed Train Plan Surfaces in Colorado

A story in today’s Rocky Mountain News discusses the potential of adding a High Speed Train Line from Casper to Albuquerque and then into the busy I-70 Mountain corridor.
I think that this is an excellent idea to improve transportation and access to a large are of the center of the country. This is one of the fastest growing regions and would help speed travel and commerce through this entire area. It would also add in travel to the mountains for skiing and other recreational endeavors.

The cost of this could be an issue, but it is something that we need to do. Train transportation in this country used to be the thing, but taking a train over long-distances today just isn’t working. This country is just too big.

But by developing regional, high-speed lines that will improve travel and will probably be faster than air travel will succeed. Just look at the Northeast corridor where train transportation is faster. In fact, it is faster to travel from Washington, DC, to New York by train than by airplane.

Let’s come together and help make this work.

Denver Bronco Darrent Williams Killed in Shooting

In the early morning hours on Speer Boulevard, Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was killed as he was riding in a limousine.
Many news outlets are covering this, here is the Denver Post story.

It is really sad that this has happened to anyone, but especially Darrent Williams. He was a good person who did a lot for the community.

But it shouldn’t happen to anyone. Shooting at someone as they are driving down the street is just insane, shooting at anyone is insane. People need to come up with another way to handle their differences or just walk away and ignore it.

This is not a good way to start the year in Denver.

My hearts and wishes go to Williams Mom and Grandmother and the Denver Broncos.

Bar Files Ethics Charges Against Duke Lacrosse Prosecutor

According to a AP Story, the North Carolina Bar has filed ethic charges against Mike Nifong, the prosecutor in the Duke Lacrosse case.
The North Carolina Bar has charged Nifong with “violating the prohibition against making comments that have a substantial likelihood of heightening public condemnation of the accused.” He was also charged with “breaking forbids dishonesty, fraud, deceit, and misrepresentation.” In the story, this was added because Nifong told a reporter that the players probably used a condom after the DNA results came back negative when he knew that wasn’t true.

When I first heard of this case, I was saddened that this had happened. But as more of the evidence has been made public I have become angry that the charges have not been dropped. But upon learning that Nifong was up for re-election, I feel that this case was brought forward for purely political reasons.

Paul’s World also has this same opinion, “It seems fairly clear this guy used this case for political purposes, pursued charges he could not sustain, withheld evidence and pretty much abused his office.”

Rape and kidnapping are serious charges. And when they are brought forward falsely, it only hurts the current and future cases that are being tried or will be tried in the future.

Nifong could be admonished or disbarred for these charges. I think Nifong should drop the rest of the charges and step down as county prosecutor and then be disbarred by the North Carolina Bar.

Some Sad News…Former President Ford Has Died

I am hearing some breaking news.  Former First Lady Betty Ford has told the Associated Press that her husband and former President Gerald Ford has died, he was 93.
He took over this country in a troubled time and did a pretty good job only to get caught up in the anti-Republican and anti-Nixon election to lose the election to Jimmy Carter.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family in this sad time.

Looks Like Others Are Having the Same Problem…

Gremlin has a pretty good post on his problems with United Parcel Service.  He is getting the run-around also from the customer service reps who have no clue where Colorado is and that it has stopped snowing here.
They also have no clue on where their distribution center is compared to Denver.  For those of you who don’t know, it is two to three blocks from the city boundary with Denver in Commerce City.

Here is Gremlin’s Post, Severe Weather.

Good luck to you Gremlin!

Say No to Ads on Verizon Phones

The New York Times had a story today that discusses that Verizon Wireless just announced that they are going to allow the use of banner ads on their Internet phones next to news, sports, and weather links.
As an Internet phone user, I think that this is ridiculous. My rates won’t go down because of this and I might end up paying more over the long-run because I have to pay for the data that I download.

Verizon needs to re-think the use of this. If they want to make this work, they better not charge me to download the ad or they need to reduce the amount that I pay for using their data plan.

Or better, stop restricting my phone and let me use all the functions that are built in. Stop restricting me and forcing me to use your services. I pay a lot every month to you already, don’t do it.

There is more mobile content out there for people this year and it will continue to grow. But should we be forced to watch generic ads that Verizon uses? Are they going to push ads on other users websites that I am surfing to? When I surf on my mobile phone, I am looking for specific information.

One of the sites that I visit is ESPN’s mobile site, got to keep up on the scores, and they have discreet ads on their site. I see the ads, but they don’t slow me down.

Here is a link to the Dreaded Purple Master’s blog on this issue, “Tread carefully, Verizon“. MIT Convergence Culture Consortium has another look at this. “Verizon Takes Cautious Step into Mobile Advertising” discusses Verizon’s cautious approach to this plan.

To see them all, you can see Technorati’s Search Results.

As a Verizon customer, I hope this goes away. But I don’t think it will. It should be tasteful and not cost me anything to get the ads.

United Parcel Service Is Incompentent!

United Parcel Service (UPS) still hasn’t delivered our package that should have been delivered.  You can read the previous posts to see the whole story.
No one knows what is going on at UPS.

The first tried to blame it on the airport (it was shipped by ground), then they blamed it on the roads in the neighborhood (they were delivering in our neighborhood on Friday on Saturday), and then they don’t know what to say.

I wouldn’t buy stock in UPS.  They can’t deliver packages at all.

If you are looking at shipping anything, you shouldn’t use UPS.  They won’t meet your needs.
